Big panels, big openings

A folding door is a row of narrow doors hinged together that concertina to one side. A stacking door is similar, except the panels slide along a track and stack neatly at the end. Both are designed to disappear when they are open, which is why their panels are tall and mostly glass.

Because each panel works as a door, each one takes safety glass. When one breaks, we only replace the glass in the damaged panel. The others stay put, and the door keeps working as a set.

Laminated or toughened in each panel

For many panels, 6.38mm laminated shatterproof glass is the right fit, and it is carried on our vans, so smaller panels can often be done on the day. Laminated glass holds together when it is struck, which matters when the doors face a garden full of balls, dogs and children.

Taller or wider panels, and many modern systems, use toughened safety glass instead. It is up to five times stronger than ordinary float glass of the same thickness, which suits large, frequently handled panels. Toughened glass is made to size, so we source it for your door and can cover the opening while we wait.

Entertainment areas and patios

These doors tend to sit where the living happens: next to the braai, on a covered stoep or beside the pool. That makes them handy in summer and exposed the rest of the time, to wind, flying objects and sometimes a less than careful guest. If your panels face the afternoon sun, tinted laminated glass can cut glare and heat without closing up the view.

When the doors no longer fold smoothly

Sometimes the glass breaks because the door was struggling long before the accident. Panels that catch, drop or have to be forced to fold put strain on hinges and glass alike. Keeping the set working together

Folding and stacking doors only work well when every panel lines up with its neighbours. After a new pane goes in, we check that the panel still hangs straight, folds or stacks with the others and closes against the frame without catching. A panel that is even slightly out can make the whole set feel stiff.

Measuring and quoting

Folding and stacking door panels vary a lot in size, so photos and measurements help. Send a close-up of the damaged panel and a photo of the whole set of doors, closed if possible. If you can measure the glass safely, add the width and height in millimetres through the quote form.
